BATTLE CRIES FOR A NEW GREEN AMERICA

~A Gaiabilly Musical~

This selection of songs began with my desire to create a new genre of activism-inspiring music which I coined Gaiabilly. I did this so that I could preserve these rarely heard songs that comprise what is my own personal sacred music.

A couple of years ago, I started working on assembling several discs of this music as a prototype for a Gaiabilly box set that every university library would want to buy. I then got a three-hour show on KMUD, "Rockin' In The Tree World," to play this music. I started to make arrangements of songs that would fill three hours, but would create an experience of listening to one album–as if you were listening to a three-hour activist-music version of an album akin to Jesus Christ Superstar. A meta-story is revealed as you journey through JC Superstar, my radio shows, and my Gaiabilly compilation discs. I call this meta-story, this whole that I make out of various songs by  various artists, an Aural Sculpture (which is also the name of my other KMUD music show).

About a year-and-a-half ago, as I was assembling collections of the music of Jim Page, Walkin' Jim Stoltz, and Ned Mudd, I got the idea to create a disc of this music for my campaign. Capturing the gestalt of my campaign in an Aural Sculpture. What was revealed to me as I listened to my 80-minute discs of these three musicians was how much knowledge of various kinds about politics and our various current crises one can get from listening to an 80-minute CD of political music. This is the first version of such a campaign disc. You could listen to it both as a handbook-in-song of my thoughts, feelings and various fundamental ideas that underlie my political outlook and my Congressional campaign. These are the things that really, really matter to me.

You can also listen to it as the world's first Gaiabilly musical, as you would JC Superstar. I think it actually could be staged as a musical. I would be very interested in hearing from anybody who wants to make something like that happen.

All of this music is from twelve activist musicians, each one providing one to five songs. As in a musical like JC Superstar, think of these singers' voices as the characters who come in and out of the story as the musical moves along.

As I assembled this CD, the specific way I wanted it to be meant that it was two to three minutes too long for one CD. I still have not decided how to solve that problem. But as mp3s, the overall time isn't limited. So what you have here is my version of the complete musical, not the final version of the single CD. Now it is 85 minutes long. This is also what one of my "Rockin' In The Tree World" radio shows is like.

You have here the soundtrack for a modern day eco-warrior's shamanic journey. A journey to restore and focus the self to prepare for imminent engagement. Please play it for all your friends. Use it as the soundtrack for a fund-raising party for my campaign. Learn the songs. Book the musicians for gigs! Have a Gaiabilly Festival. Wouldn't it be great to invite all of these musicians to perform a concert version of the complete musical at a Gaiabilly Festival?

I don't know if all of the musicians will give me permission to use their songs, and I won't release a CD until I have all the permissions for all of the songs. So what is eventually released may be a little different from what I'm putting up here. This may be your only chance to hear the Director's Cut of the entire musical.

The following comments take you on a tour of the narrative flow of the musical and elaborate a bit on why songs relate to my campaign views. Perhaps they are the liner notes...

A giant thank you to all of the musicians for going wherever they had to go internally to create this extraordinary music. I put this together with the deepest love and gratitude for you. This really is music that can save the world. I think this will be the 60s San Francisco activist music for our time. I see ahead Gaiabilly Festivals as political action, focusing, and training camps sprouting up everywhere across the globe. A new wind is blowing. This is what I'm fighting for. Tables Will Turn.

Organize of Die. See you down the trail.
